We are pleased to invite you to visit one of the most modern fish research labs in the world. Since the opening in 1971, the Matre Research Station has been the core facility for salmonid and marine aquaculture research at the Institute of Marine Research together with several national and international collaborators. Recent, substantial upgrades include automatic control of the water properties, such as temperature, salinity, oxygen and acidification of water tanks containing from 40 to 5000 liters.

Modern analytical laboratories are combined with both tank and cage environment laboratories providing a unique research arena that plays a key role in marine aquaculture, fisheries and ecological science and research.

The tour will then proceed outside the city centre for a tour of some of the residential areas before stopping for an inside visit at the Fantoft Stave Church. This wooden church with the characteristic architectural style originates from a fjord settlement in the Sognefjord and was erected in the year 1150. The coach will then proceed to the Open Air Museum of ‘Gamle Bergen’. The city of Bergen is known for its old wooden houses and the Old Bergen Museum (open air museum) consists of a whole cluster of them. Some of them are on their original sites, but the majority has been collected from other parts of Bergen. Here they have been rebuilt along streets, alleys, and on squares, just as they would have been 100-200 years ago. The houses are carefully restored to their original beauty and show the original Bergen architecture traditions. The interiors are from our forefather’s times, several generations past. They give visitors of today a picture of life in those days at work and time of leisure, in sorrow and happiness in old Bergen.
